Manual Visual Inspection (MVI) of PCBs

The simplest method of inspecting printed circuit boards (PCBs) is Manual Visual Inspection (MVI). In this type of inspection, operators examine the PCB with the naked eye or under magnification. They compare the board to the design documentation to ensure it meets all specifications, while also checking for common defects. The types of defects inspected may vary depending on the PCB type and the components it contains. MVI can be useful after nearly every stage of the PCB manufacturing process, including assembly. At EMSG, we perform MVI under magnification for every PCB we produce. You may also choose to follow MVI with more advanced and comprehensive inspections.

Inspectors review nearly every aspect of the PCB and look for various common defects at each checkpoint.
A typical PCB visual inspection checklist may include:
• Board Thickness & Flatness – Ensure the board thickness is correct and check surface roughness or warping.
• Assembly Dimensions – Verify that assembly dimensions meet requirements, paying special attention to measurements related to electrical connectors.
• Conductor Pattern Integrity – Inspect the completeness and clarity of the conductive pattern; check for soldering issues, open circuits, burrs, and spacing.
• Surface Quality – Look for pits, dents, scratches, pinholes, and other defects on traces and pads.
• Via Placement – Ensure all vias are correctly positioned, drilled accurately, meet the specified diameter, and are free of gaps or nodules.
• Plating Quality – Check the tightness, roughness, and glossiness of plating; look for any raised defects.
• Coating Quality – Assess the coating’s quality and verify that the solder mask color is uniform, durable, and correctly applied.

MVI offers several advantages over other inspection methods. Its simplicity makes it low-cost, requiring no special equipment apart from magnification tools. It also allows for quick inspections that can be easily incorporated into the final stages of the production process.
